Job Summary

The Assistant Director of International Student Services supports the Director in advancing the success and well-being of international students at Southwestern Seminary. This position assists with federal compliance responsibilities, international student advising, programming, and community engagement. The Assistant Director serves as a Designated School Official (DSO), helping ensure institutional compliance with federal regulations related to F-1 students, while fostering an environment that promotes student flourishing and cultural integration.

Key Responsibilities

Compliance and Student Advising

  • Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) for F-1/F-2 student visa compliance and other visa status’s as necessary.

  • Assist with SEVIS records, I-20 issuance and maintenance, CPT/OPT processing, and other government-mandated reporting.

  • Assist is COS, degree extensions, tax and graduation seminars, recruiting, and staff development.

  • Maintain accurate student records and ensure timely updates of compliance documentation – institutionally and government expectations.

  • Advise international students on immigration regulations, employment authorization, and related matters.

International Student Services and Programming

  • Support international student orientations, arrival processes, and onboarding.

  • Assist in planning and executing international student events such as Taste of the Nations, Supply Day, and other cultural engagement opportunities.

  • Provide individual support to international students, fostering a welcoming environment and connecting them to campus resources.

  • Help coordinate the International Student Organization in partnership with Student Life.

  • Expectations: Liaison to fellowship groups, student care, and information.

Administrative and Office Support

  • Assist the Director with communication, reporting, and documentation related to compliance and student success.

  • Help track enrollment and retention data for international students.

  • Maintain confidentiality of student information and sensitive compliance data.

  • Provide clerical and office support as needed, including scheduling, correspondence, and recordkeeping.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Successful completion of background check, education verification, work verification and credit check may be required.

  • Ability to provide valid proof of identity and Work Authorization in the U.S.

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.

  • Prior experience in higher education, student services, or international education preferred.

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident (required for DSO eligibility).

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with diverse student populations.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Detail-oriented, task-driven, and able to meet deadlines independently.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; experience with higher education software (e.g., SEVIS, Colleague, Slate) is a plus.

  • Commitment to serving students with compassion, integrity, and cultural sensitivity.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to use a computer, phone, and other office equipment.

  • Regularly required to talk and hear in office and meeting settings.

  • Must be able to move about campus to attend meetings and support student events.

  • Specific vision abilities include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
